How to launch an online store: a step-by-step plan
Published: 7 min read
From idea to first orders — what to do, in what order and what not to get wrong. A plan for a small store.
1. Define your range and buyer
How many products do you have and who buys them? Everything depends on it: 20 products can sell from one page, 500 need a catalog with filters and search.
2. Choose a platform
| Option | Pros | Cons |
|---|---|---|
| Marketplace | Ready traffic | Fees, competitors on the same page, no brand of your own |
| Site builder | Quick start | Monthly fees, template look, limits |
| Your own store | Your code, brand, any features, no subscription | Higher upfront cost |
Often the best is both: a marketplace for traffic and your own store for repeat customers and better margins.
3. Sort out the legal side
- A registered business that can sell online in your country.
- A business bank account to receive payments.
- A payment provider connected to that account.
- Terms of sale, a returns policy and a privacy policy on the site.
4. Prepare the catalog
A spreadsheet with names, prices, descriptions, specs and photos. Good photos are the biggest factor in selling online. A ready Excel/CSV file saves days — it’s imported into the store at once.
5. Build the store
The minimum for launch: catalog, product page, cart, a short checkout, online payments, delivery and an admin panel for products and orders. New-order alerts in Telegram or email so none is missed. See it live: a plant store and an audio equipment store.
6. Test before launch
- Place a few test orders from different phones.
- Check payment with a real card, and a refund.
- Check that alerts arrive and orders show up in the admin.
- Check speed on mobile internet.
7. First sales
Google doesn’t show a new store right away — it takes months. First sales usually come from Instagram and Google ads, your own audience and marketplaces. Work on SEO in parallel: category pages, product descriptions, a blog.
FAQ
- How much does it cost to launch an online store?
- The store itself starts at $300 (one-page) or $400 (with a catalog). Add a domain, hosting, photos and an ad budget for the first sales.
- How long does a launch take?
- Development takes 1–3 weeks. Together with the catalog, business setup and payments, launching in about a month is realistic.
- Can I start without online payments?
- Yes, with cash on delivery. But online payments reduce refused parcels and build trust.
